Get to know the organizations you want to benefit. If you do not yet have specific organizations in mind, determine a general area, and identify several organizations that fit in that area. Visit their websites, call for their information packets, or ask for a tour (known as a site visit).
While evaluating potential grantee organizations, consider:
- Overall mission and planning
- Board and leadership skills of chief executive and senior management
- Strength of financial structure, administration, and governing board
- Strength of individual programs and services
- Effectiveness in comparison to similar organizations
- Record of success and potential for greater achievement
Most effective nonprofit organizations will have this information readily available. But don't automatically rule out smaller or grassroots organizations which don't have polished marketing materials. They are often working on an emerging issue, or filling an unmet need, but are not well-known. As a start-up organization, your grant could have a huge impact on their growth. It just means you might need to do a little more research and due diligence.
