Helping Communities Impacted by the Nepal Floods

Massive flash flooding struck northern Nepal on August 26, causing widespread destruction across communities near the country’s border with Tibet in China. Triggered by a glacial collapse in the Himalayas, floodwaters and debris swept through villages, damaging or destroying homes, roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure and leaving hundreds of people missing as search and rescue operations continue.

Emergency responders, humanitarian organizations and local authorities are working to locate survivors, reach isolated communities, and assess the extent of the damage. With critical transportation infrastructure destroyed and some affected areas accessible only by air, immediate humanitarian needs include emergency shelter, clean water, food, medical care, and other essential supplies.

While local organizations and first responders are leading relief efforts, philanthropic support can help expand emergency response operations, provide critical supplies and services, and assist affected communities as they begin the long process of recovery and rebuilding.

For donors looking to help, supporting established organizations with experience responding to major disasters and existing operations or partnerships in Nepal can be an effective way to contribute to both immediate relief efforts and longer-term recovery.

NPT has compiled a non-exhaustive list of nonprofits supporting communities affected by the flash flooding in Nepal and the surrounding region:

All Hands and Hearts (EIN 20-3414952) is on the ground responding to devastating floods and mudslides in Nepal, where its team is mobilizing to provide emergency relief to affected families. The organization has maintained a presence in Nepal since responding to the 2015 earthquake.

CARE USA (EIN 13-1685039) is coordinating with government agencies, humanitarian organizations, and local partners to assess needs and prepare emergency relief, including shelter, hygiene, and dignity kits for affected families.

Direct Relief (EIN 95-1831116) is mobilizing support around potential medical needs and is communicating with Nepal’s Ministry of Health and nonprofit partners in the country. The organization has shared available medical inventory as health needs are assessed.

Global Empowerment Mission (EIN 45-3782061) has mobilized its Asia team to the region to provide immediate assistance to affected communities. The organization previously responded to the 2023 earthquake in Nepal.

GlobalGiving (EIN 30-0108263) has established a dedicated Nepal Flood Relief Fund to provide flexible funding to local organizations addressing immediate needs including search and rescue, emergency medical care, shelter, food, and clean water, as well as longer-term recovery and rebuilding.

Mercy Corps (EIN 91-1148123) is coordinating with local authorities and humanitarian partners to identify urgent gaps and determine how best to support emergency response efforts in affected communities.

Project HOPE (EIN 53-0242962) has deployed emergency response personnel to Nepal to coordinate with local partners and officials, conduct a rapid needs assessment, and identify critical health and humanitarian needs.

Save the Children (EIN 06-0726487) supports emergency response teams working in the affected areas and delivering essential items, including household and cooking kits, mosquito nets, and blankets to 1,000 households in the first phase of assistance.

UNICEF USA (EIN 13-1760110) is supporting UNICEF’s emergency humanitarian work for children and families, including access to safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation supplies, medical care, nutrition, and protection.

World Central Kitchen (EIN 27-3521132) is working with restaurant partners to provide meals in Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. WCK relief team members are also traveling to the area to support partners already providing food assistance.
