A Donor’s Guide to Helping Those Impacted by Flooding and Landslides in Southeast Asia

Author National Philanthropic Trust

In recent weeks, a series of powerful tropical storms and heavy monsoon-season rains have triggered catastrophic flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka, Indonesia (especially the island of Sumatra), and parts of Southeast Asia. To date, storms have claimed more than 1,000 lives, with hundreds of thousands displaced.

As rescue and recovery efforts continue, you may be considering how to support those impacted by these disasters.

DAF donors are uniquely situated to provide rapid response to communities most in need of support.

For NPT donors looking to help, we are sharing a non-exhaustive list of nonprofits and local organizations working to provide relief in the region:

American National Red Cross (EIN: 53-0196605) supports global disaster response through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). In this crisis, it helps channel U.S.-based donations to the Sri Lanka Red Cross and Palang Merah Indonesia (Indonesian Red Cross), which are leading evacuations, emergency distributions, and anticipatory flood-response measures outlined in IFRC’s 2025 Flood Early Action Protocol.

CARE USA (EIN: 13-1685039) is engaged in regional disaster response and long-term resilience work. Its teams operate in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries, addressing urgent needs such as shelter, food security, and recovery planning for communities affected by flooding and storms.

GlobalGiving Foundation, Inc. (EIN: 30-0108263) hosts ongoing projects for community-led flood relief in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Funds support vetted local partners conducting evacuations, distributing supplies, and assisting families displaced by rising waters and landslides.

Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) (EIN: 45-5257937) provides strategic guidance and manages disaster-relief funds that support medium- and long-term recovery across Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Southeast Asia. Grants often bolster local organizations addressing climate-related floods, displacement, and infrastructure recovery.

Sri Lanka Association of Greater Washington (SLAGW) (EIN: 52-2329355) supports humanitarian and educational initiatives in Sri Lanka, including emergency assistance following natural disasters. SLAGW is partnering with the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society to support for flood relief efforts and ensure access to clean water for affected communities.

Mercy Corps (EIN: 91-1148123) has been working in Indonesia since 1999, helping people prepare for, and recover from, natural disasters. Their Indonesia Response Team is working to deliver immediate support, including hygiene kits, clean water, and cash assistance to those displaced by Cyclone Senyar.

Save the Children Federation, Inc. (EIN: 06-0726487) provides child-focused emergency services in Sri Lanka and Indonesia, including safe shelters, education continuity, medical support, and family reunification efforts for children affected by floods and landslides.

UNICEF USA (EIN: 13-1760110) is responding across South and Southeast Asia with programs focused on child protection, WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), emergency health support, and education. UNICEF USA mobilizes U.S. donor support to sustain these operations in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the region.

World Central Kitchen (EIN: 27-3521132) is working with local partners to provide meals to communities across the Philippines, responding to the impact of two major typhoons and an earthquake earlier this fall.
